Learn how to make a simple glasses case from some small pieces of fabric.

I often find my sunglasses come with a hard case that is bulky, hard to close, and heavy to carry around all day in my handbag. This really discourages me to put my glasses in a case and I find them getting scratched quickly.

That’s, why I decided to make my own fabric cases that keep my glasses, protect them in my handbag, car, or dresser. These are super light and really affordable to make.

These cases are great for in the Summer time to protect your glasses at the beach with sand getting into your bags. You could also pop in some smaller items like a credit card and lip gloss if you needed too!

How to Make a Glasses Case PROJECT tips

  • Add interfacing or use a heavier fabric to create a sturdier glasses case.
  • Use a pretty lace or ribbon for the drawstrings.
  • Double-check the size of your sunglasses before cutting out the fabric pieces.
  • Look for softer fabrics like cotton or flannel that will be gentle against your fabric lenses. You don’t want to scratch them!

How to Make a Glasses Case

Start by measuring the size of your sunglasses with a ruler. I just used my quilting ruler for this. Write the dimensions down for reference.

Cut out two rectangles of fabric at 3 1/2 inches wide by 14” long. If you want to follow these dimensions just double check your glasses will fit well in this size.

If you need to work out your own measurements add 1 inch each to each side of the glasses. Double the height and add 2 inches for the casing and extra wiggle room.

Start by placing the two pieces right sides together and pin the short ends. Sew the ends together and turn them out to the right sides. This will hide the seams inside the case.

Overlock the side seams together on both sides along the raw edges.

Fold the long sides together and pin on both sides. Leave 1 1/4 inches open at the top of the side seams.

Sew the side seams together with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Fold down the tops to meet the start of the side seam stitching and pin each layer in place. Stitch the casings in place. This is the drawstring casing.

Cut the drawstring in half evenly and thread them through the casing one piece at a time. Using a safety pin pull the tie through both drawstring casings and knot the ends together.

For the next tie make sure to thread this starting on the opposite side so there will be a drawstring on each side of the case.
