Recently, I’ve been testing and replacing chemical cleaners in my home every week. My latest natural cleaner obsession is this homemade shower scrub. Since I always use cream cleaners, this was a necessity for my cleaning supplies.

My favourite thing about soft scrub cleaners is how easily they can remove hard water, soap scum and grease from glass and the shower but the chemicals in them are toxic. A massive goal of mine is to eliminate the use of toxic cleaners with homemade products. A lot of the store-bought cleaners are filled with harmful chemicals that are toxic to our skin and lungs!

I’m excited to share the recipe for this shower scrub cleaner with you after putting it to the test for a few weeks. When I say put to the test, my hubby is an electrician, which means the bathroom can get filthy very quickly. You can count on this stuff to get the job done!

This homemade shower scrub is soft enough not to scratch surfaces, it’s gritty enough to keep scrubbing to a minimum.

The best thing about this cleaner is that you can mix it right before cleaning your shower or bathroom, so you won’t need to keep a container on hand. You can use this scrub and then finish your cleaning with my all-purpose natural cleaner, your bathroom will be just as new by the time you’re finished!

Shower Scrub Ingredients

Baking soda – Baking soda has been used for cleaning for many years. It works wonders for removing odours and is a mild abrasive cleaner, making it ideal for this shower scrub cleaner. Plus it’s super cheap to buy from the supermarket.

Salt – Salt will add some extra abrasive texture along with the baking soda.

Essential oils – I love lemon essential oil because of its antibacterial properties, making it a great choice for use in the bathroom or cleaning.

Castile Soap Castile soap is my best friend. It’s magical! you can use it in beauty and cleaning products, it’s all-natural, great for sensitive skin and cheap! I love Dr Bronner’s brand of peppermint or tea tree for cleaning. You can make your own shampoo and hand soap with it.

Best Essential Oils for Cleaning

Essential oils are incredible for cleaning. Here are some of my favourites:

Lemon – If you love that clean, fresh scent, try adding lemon essential oils. The antiseptic, antiviral, and anti-infective properties make it ideal for cleaning products. Also known to help reduce stress – a bonus while cleaning the bathroom!

Peppermint – Clean, fresh and minty. Peppermint oil is antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiseptic.

Eucalyptus – If peppermint isn’t your thing, try eucalyptus oil. Fresh and sweet-smelling, it also has antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Tea Tree – Tea tree is amazing for killing mould. Its antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiseptic. Making it great for adding to homemade cleaners.

Tips To Make DIY Shower Scrub

  • I like to make mine in a jar with a glass lid so I can save it if it’s not used up.
  • This scrub cleaner is thick like a paste, so you may need a spoon or to use your hands to scoop it out with.
  • This doesn’t store super well, so try to make enough as you need. This recipe makes enough for one bathroom. Double or triple as you need.
  • When you have finished cleaning, wipe the surfaces with a clean, wet towel to get any baking soda off.

How To Make Homemade Shower Scrub Cleaner

  1. Combine the baking soda, salt, essential oils, and water in a jar.
  2. Mix until a paste consistency forms.
  3. Use in the shower or the bathroom with a scrubbing brush or cloth.

How To Use this Scrub Cleaner

This will be a paste-like consistency similar to a cream cleanser. I use a soft scrubbing brush for my first scrub of the shower, then a cloth to wipe it down with an all-purpose cleaner.

You can use this shower scrub in the toilet by adding some inside the bowl and scrubbing as usual. Leave it to sit for a few minutes, then scrub again and flush away.

Try this on the bathtub to get rid of water scum rings and in the bathroom basin. Apply the scrub cleaner all over the bath or sink with a wet cloth and leave to sit for a few minutes, then wipe clean.

For stubborn stains or grime, rub on a good amount of cleaner and leave it to sit for 10 minutes to work its magic. Scrub with a brush and rinse clean. Repeat as needed.
