Over the past few years, I have found myself slowly gravitating towards a self-sufficient lifestyle. I find so much interest and joy in learning traditional skills like sewing, mending, gardening, cooking from scratch and knitting to name a few.
The Good Old Days
I think about my grandparents cooking for their large families and my nana sewing my mum and sister new dresses for Christmas. Not because they wanted to but because that’s just all they could afford and that was just the way it was.
It’s sad to see traditional skills being replaced by mass production and poor quality just for convenience. It’s scary to stop and look at how much we are over-consuming and causing ourselves to loose such important traditional skills.
It’s time for us to get back to our roots and learn about these crafts to pass on to our children and grandchildren. You don’t have to learn everything but the skills you do learn about trying to learn as much as you can!
Why Sewing is an Important Traditional Skill
That’s why I salute you if you are learning a tradition skill. Sewing is in my opinion one of the most amazing skills you could learn.
You will have the ability to sew clothing, homewares, and so much more once you get the basics down. There is also nothing more satisfying than the feeling of accomplishment when you finish hand making a project.
Traditional Skills Save you Money
Many know that cooking from scratch can save you a lot of money and the same goes for sewing. Being able to sew your own clothing is cheaper than buying from the store.
Sewing pillowcases, cushions, and aprons are cheaper than the homeware store. Sewing your baby clothing from organic materials that you know will fit is cheaper than the upmarket baby boutique!
When you get into sewing and learn the basics you will find you will start to mend and alter the clothing or sheets you already own.
You will also start to get an idea about how much money you are actually saving. This will be noticed when you sew yourself a linen blouse instead of buying one that is 5X overpriced! It’s incredible!
