Ingredients & Substitutions

cheesy garlic bread ingredients
  • French or Italian Loaf – this recipe works well with a large loaf of bread, like French or Italian loaf, because it is long and wide enough for big pieces of cheesy garlic bread. Avoid hard-crust breads as they will get too hard once baked.
  • Butter – don’t use a butter spread; stick to real butter for this recipe.
  • Garlic – Freshly crushed garlic will taste best, but pre-crushed garlic will also work.
  • Salt
  • Garlic powder – to add an extra garlic punch!
  • Mozzarella cheese – makes this garlic bread deliciously cheesy and gooey!
  • Cheddar cheese – adds a sharp, rich cheese flavour. You can use parmesan instead.
  • Parsley – fresh for garnishing. Dried parsley or thyme will work too!

How to Make Cheesy Garlic Bread

The printable recipe card below has the full ingredients list and instructions.

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 180℃ (375℉). Slice the loaf of bread in half lengthways to make two long pieces.

Step 2: Add the butter to a small bowl and soften it in the microwave for 10-20 seconds. You want it to be soft, not melted! So start with 10 seconds. Mix in the garlic, garlic powder and salt.

Step 3: Spread the butter mixture evenly across both pieces of garlic bread. Then, cover each piece evenly with the mozzarella and cheddar cheese.

Step 4: Place on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes. Then turn the oven to grill and leave for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese is light brown and bubbly.

Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh parsley and another sprinkle of salt, and then cut into slices.

How to Freeze Cheesy Garlic Bread

You can freeze this cheesy garlic bread before baking to have a convenient side dish option ready to go. Just follow the recipe up to step 3, then place a piece of parchment paper on top of each piece of garlic bread to prevent the cheese from sticking to the wrapping. Next, wrap each piece in tin foil and plastic wrap before placing them in the freezer for up to 3 months.

To bake from frozen, simply remove the packaging, place on a baking sheet, and bake at 180℃ (375℉) for 15-20 minutes or until completely cooked through and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
