This easy, beginner-friendly sewing tutorial teaches how to make a DIY patchwork laptop case in less than 2 hours. Whether you take your laptop to work, school, or university, this sewing project will help you create your own personalised case.
After months of owning a laptop, I kept putting off buying a laptop case. Mainly because I couldn’t find any I liked. Since I work from home most days, it’s not a major issue, but I thought this would be a great opportunity to make one using my Cricut Maker 3.
Did you know that the Cricut Maker 3 can cut out fabric? I was so excited when I discovered the rotary blade. I waste so much time procrastinating cutting out fabric for my projects, but this has been a game changer for me.
I love making quick, easy sewing projects on my days off that I can use every day, like these drawstring bags or patchwork coasters for my desk. They can easily be cut out on the Cricut, making them even quicker to make!

- Quick to make in just a few hours
- Personable to your style
- Quick to cut out on your Cricut Maker 3
Materials and Tools You Will Need:
I wanted to make this a fun project, so I designed the patchwork to look like flowers on the front and back by blocking different colours together. I used my Cricut Maker 3 to cut out the patchwork pieces. It saved me so much time trying to measure and cut out everything.
You will need three coloured materials for this patchwork laptop case.
If you have a Cricut maker 3, you can find my project to cut out your fabrics in the Cricut design space.
If you don’t have a Cricut or want to try different coloured patches, follow the cutting list below.

How to Make a DIY Patchwork Laptop Case
Step One: Sew the patches together to create the outer of the laptop case
Start by sewing the patches together with a 1cm seam allowance to create the laptop case front and back and fold-over piece.
The fold-over flap is made from 3 slightly bigger patchwork pieces. Sew them together along the 12cm long sides.
Then begin sewing the front piece. I like to lay out my pattern first, then pin the seams together in rows (see the pictures below). The front is made from 9 patchwork pieces.
Once the rows are sewn, join the rows together to create the front piece. Repeat for the back.
This will become the outer shell of the laptop case. To connect the front, back and fold-over pieces, lay them out in this order: fold-over on the left-hand side, front and back.
If you use a print that works one way, pay attention to it in this step. I have used a one-directional print for my laptop case, so you can follow my layout in the image below.
Join the three pieces with a 1cm seam allowance to make one long panel.
Step Two: Join the layers together
Place the batting down first, then place the lining on top with the right side up and the outer fabric on top with the right side facing down.
Pin all the layers together along the bottom edge. Sew the bottom edge with a 1cm seam, leaving a 10cm gap in the centre of the seam. (This is for later turning the laptop case to the right side).
Bring the outer laptop case layer around and press the bottom seam flat. The batting should be on the inside of the outer and lining.
Step Three: Fold the case into place
With the outer side facing down, bring the bottom of the laptop case up to meet the fold-over flap seam. Secure the lining and batting together at the seam with pins, don’t pin the outer, as this needs to be loose for the next step.
Step Four: Sew the layers together
Bring the outer fabric around and fold it up to the top of the lining. Pin all the layers around the edges.
Sew around the layers with a 1cm seam allowance and trim the corners.
Step Five: Turn the laptop case through
Turn the laptop case out to the right side through the 10cm gap in the bottom seam. Press it flat and wiggle out the corners.
Close the gap with hand stitches or edgestitch closed.
Step Six: Attach Velcro to the flap
Cut the Velcro into two pieces that are 5cm long. Pin the Velcro 3cm in from the outer edges of the laptop case and 4cm down from the top edge – loop side on the flap and the hook side on the laptop case.
Sew around the edges of the velcro to secure it in place.
